Feb 5, 2024 - Apr 30, 2024

Looking to elevate your organization, and bring it to the next level? Bring on learners from Albion College to be your learner-consultants, in a project-based experience. Learners will work on one main project over the experience of the semester, connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools. The students are enrolled in a course is intended as an introduction to the study of drug use, abuse, and addiction, with a focus on recreationally used drugs. Students are exposed to a variety of approaches all based on the scientific literature of drug use that will examine how drugs influence our brain and behavior as well as the consequences of drug use for society.

Molecular Modeling in Materials Science, Drug Design, and Small Molecule Analysis

Chem 340

Feb 26, 2024 - Apr 25, 2024

Bring on advanced chemistry learners from Albion College to be your virtual interns, in a project-based experience as they are introduced to topics in quantum chemistry, molecular modeling, and molecular dynamics. Learners will work on one or more projects of your choosing over the internship period, connecting with you via virtual communication tools, as needed. The students are enrolled in a course that delves into the microscopic and molecular foundations of chemistry, exploring topics such as molecular mechanics and quantum mechanics techniques which are used to predict the structures, energies, and fundamental properties of atoms and molecules. Learners will gain experience in ab initio quantum mechanics methods (Hartree-Fock, Moeller-Plesset/Configuration Interaction, and density functional theory (DFT) ), semi-empirical methods (MNDO, PM3, ZINDO), and molecular mechanics which can be used to perform molecular geometry optimizations, determine molecular orbitals and energies, and can be used to calculate molecular, thermodynamic, and spectroscopic properties. These methods involve building and visualizing molecules in three dimensions (3D) and performing calculations on molecules containing atoms ranging from two to hundreds. Learners will also be introduced to the fundamentals of molecular dynamics calculations and simulations which can be used to predict atomic trajectories for complex systems.

Charting Futures: Senior Colloquium Impact Series

PBSV 397

Feb 29, 2024 - Apr 27, 2024

Looking to elevate your organization, and bring it to the next level? Bring on learners from Albion College to be your virtual interns, in a project-based experience. Learners will work on one or more projects of your choosing over the internship period, connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools. This Albion College and Ford Institute course guides graduating students through three key elements. Firstly, it encourages them to integrate public service into their future lives. Secondly, it delves into the policy-making process, allowing students to explore a chosen area of public policy and engage in group exercises. Lastly, it revisits Albion's development theme, prompting critical examination of nuanced options for the college. Throughout, the course emphasizes the interconnectedness of public policy and public service, aiming to equip students with a foundation for a life of informed and improved public service.
